SCORM In A Nutshell

SCORM In A Nutshell

To put it simply, SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) is the de facto communication standard for elearning software products and systems. SCORM interacts with a Learning Management System (LMS), Course Authoring Tools and other Virtual Learning Environments (VLE).

The benefit of the SCORM standard is its ability to easily integrate course content and other related information into an LMS from different sources, saving time and money.

Who Developed It?

SCORM was developed by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) in response to problems that arose when sharing distance learning courses amongst the different LMS’s within the department. The first version of SCORM was developed in 1997 by ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning).

Versions

There are now four different versions of SCORM, 1.1, 1.2, 2004 with a second, third and fourth edition. The latest version is, TinCan API, which resolves some of the issues with older versions of SCORM such as collaborative learning and platform transitions, ( i.e. computer to mobile device).

Compliance

When choosing your LMS vendor you need to make sure they are SCORM-compliant or you may have compatibility problems. SCORM isn’t a perfect standard and compliance doesn’t mean that learning interactions will work properly with your LMS. So ideally use a course authoring tool that integrates with your Learning Management System.

It’s imperative that elearning developers ensure courses are built to SCORM standards

If you choose to retain a firm to custom build your e-learning courses, it’s imperative that elearning developers ensure courses are built to SCORM standards. For additional information on SCORM, view the article “What is SCORM and How Does it Influence Training Tracking Software?”

Vantage Path only develops SCORM-compliant courses and our LMS is SCORM-compliant. Our custom elearning development and even our simplified elearning templates are SCORM certifiable should a user deem it necessary to have them tested by a relevant testing agency.
