Executive Leadership: Success Flows from Top Down

The success of every business starts somewhere. Success is not always determined by the bottom line; it is often determined by the goals, dreams, and expectations of the leader. Executive leadership means taking charge and championing a vision.

The problem today is that leaders are disposable. If a company loses you to overwork, exhaustion, or burnout, you can be replaced. As a senior leader in your organization, you have the most power, and the most pressure. It is up to you to create vision and direction, and it is up to you to find a way to make sure you have a team that follows through with it. You are the ultimate decision-making authority and therefore, you are at the center of it all.

While serving in the role of a company’s executive leadership, there are a few key points you need to focus on in order to remain successful and not burn out.

1) Put yourself first

Focus on personal health and well-being, whatever that means to you. It could be 15 minutes of meditation every morning, a brisk walk at lunch, eating healthy or going to the gym. Find what helps you maintain a clear and healthy thought process and make time for it daily.
Don’t neglect your family. Look for creative ways to include them in your thoughts, passions and life-long goals.

2) Be authentic

Make sure your leadership style is congruent with who you are. For example, if you are a caring and nurturing person, find a way for that to manifest at work.
Make sure that your work is something in which you believe.
Don’t adopt a leadership style that “studies have shown work”, unless it is a style that suits you well.

3) Take a 360-degree look at the business and it’s legacy

How can this business benefit you and the people around you: your family, your employees and your clients?
Go further. What are the long-term benefits of this business? Delve deep. Are there national, international or global benefits? Will the benefits you create outlast your life and leave a legacy?

4) Develop relationships with your peers

Start an executive leadership group. By developing friendships with your peers, you can share successes, failures and challenges. This helps alleviate the pressure of feeling like you are the only one doing this job.

Glean knowledge from the expertise of others while sharing your expertise with them.

Remember that as an executive leader you are at the top of the company ladder and success flows top down.
